Give the unexpected: Original gift ideas | Lifestyle

I like to surprise my loved ones with gifts that are both unique and unexpected. I’ve recently been asked by a few friends and family for some original birthday and Valentine’s day gift ideas. Having a dished out some inspiration, I thought it would be a nice idea to write a post on this subject. Buying gifts can be a stressful exercise, and we all need a little prompt now and again to get our creative juices flowing. Here are some of my ideas for original gifts. Please feel free to use them and adapt them as you see fit.

Intangible gifts

Sometimes the most unexpected gifts are those that don’t come wrapped up in pretty paper and bows. As opposed to gifts like jewelry or perfume, intangible gifts include attending a show or concert, going camping or cooking your loved one a very special meal. If you like these options, why not do something extra special and buy a star for your friend or relative? This would make a very romantic Valentine’s Day gift for the ladies. As with DIY presents, there are many options for intangible gifts. The most important thing is that they aim to create a special and memorable experience for your loved ones.

Customised gifts

I love giving customised gifts because it gives you the opportunity to have a bit of fun or to say something meaningful, whatever suits the occasion. And many personalised gifts kill two birds with one stone: they both practical and personal. For example, a mug for your best friend with a funny quote or picture from your past will put a smile on his or her face every time they have a cuppa.

Do It Yourself Gifts

You can’t get much more original than a gift that you’ve crafted with your own fair hands. I am a huge fan of giving and receiving handmade presents. They are so personal, thoughtful and are genuinely one of a kind. One of my all time favourite gifts I have received was a tall, elegant bottle containing homemade limoncello. I believe this is the most delicious drink in the world, but I haven’t been able to bring myself to consume it; it just looks too beautiful! You can make anything your heart desires for your loved ones: from food and drink to photographs and poems to hats and scarves. So, roll up your sleeves and start creating some masterpieces.

Skill gifts

Have you ever considered giving your loved ones the opportunity to learn a new skill? This could be just the unexpected and unique gift you are searching for. Some examples of skill gifts include a grow your own chilli kit, make your own gin set or a candle making pack. If you are buying for a big occasion, then a course could make the perfect gift. Vouchers can be bought for a wide range of classes teaching arts, cookery, languages, dance and music.

Please tell me about your original gift ideas!

Thanks for reading.
